Go Shorty, It's Your B-Day

Just checkin' on you

I was feeling a little nosey, so I thought I would look in on you and see if you are sitting at your computer...

Yup, there you are!

Doing nothing as usual!

Bananas

After Reading this, you will NEVER look at a banana in the same way again!

Bananas Contain three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber, a banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy. Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes.

But energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.

Depression:
According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel better.

PMS:
Forget the pills -- eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

Anemia:
High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

Blood Pressure:
This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it the perfect way to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

Brain Power:
200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex England) school were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

Constipation:
High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

Hangovers:
One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

Heartburn:
Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

Morning Sickness:
Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness

Mosquito bites:
Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

Nerves:
Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.

Overweight and at work?
Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and chips. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.

Ulcers:
The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

Temperature control:
Many other cultures see bananas as a "cooling" fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand, for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD):
Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer tryptophan.

Smoking:
Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6 and B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Stress:
Potassium is a vital mineral which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be rebalanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.

Strokes:
According to research in "The New England Journal of Medicine," eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death from strokes by as much as 40%!

So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrates, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around. So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, "A banana a day keeps the doctor away!"

Footnote:

If your roses are covered with Aphids, drape banana skins over the branches, I'ts amazing, but in a day or less, they are GONE!

I've tried it, and I couldn't believe it, no more aphids, as long as I save my banana skins for the rose bushes!

Impressed? Well then, PASS IT ON TO YOUR FRIENDS!

Unzip a BANANA today!

Nerd Uproar

You want to witness a bunch of computer nerds (myself included) in an uproar? Go on over to the 37 Signals blog - Signal vs. Noise - and read this post:

Web developers: Microsoft has no idea what's going on

It's hilarious but at the same time it's all the more reason why I got Ubuntu installed this past weekend and will be working on learning how to do everything I need/want to on a Linux based system at this point.

I'm wondering how long it would take MS to release software if they cut out coding pop-up error messages and just made their damn software work???

ColdFusion 8 (Scorpio)

Each version of ColdFusion, as well as most nerd projects, has a code name - and this version is named Scorpio. Amusing to some of us... Anyway, Ray Camden has posted some public info about it so I thought I'd share: http://ray.camdenfamily.com/index.cfm/2006/10/24/Known-ColdFusion-8Scorpio-Facts

Adobe Max 2006

It's that time of year again and today is the opening day of Adobe MAX 2006 and it's a little wierd to be saying Adobe MAX instead of Macromedia. But change is good - I'm learning that SLOWLY. MAX is in Las Vegas this year so I'm wondering how much it will really cost the people that go. LOL I'm not a gambler but I would like to see Vegas and that whole experience of being there from what I've heard. Some of my favorite ColdFusion gurus will be there including: Ray Camden, Christian Cantrell, Ben Forta, Simon Horwith, and Matt Woodward. I'm sure they will all be posting to their blogs for the rest of us less fortunate nerds that are stuck at home. LOL Maybe next year I can go check it out for myself...

Finally! A Cure for Hiccups LOL

Fesmire, a specialist in emergency medicine and cardiology, probably did not have a real Nobel in mind when he published "Termination of intractable hiccups with digital rectal massage" in Annals of Emergency Medicine (vol 17, p 872). Read the full story here...

Subversion Development

There's a great post from Dave Shuck's InstantSpot about using a Subversion Development Environment. If you're wondering what the hell you could possibly use this for...have you ever accidentally uploaded a file that wasn't quite ready for production & overwritten the one that was working fine? Ever called your hosting company to restore your backup files because you screwed up? Now you're listening. LOL Read Dave's article for more info...

Live a Life That Matters

Ready or not, someday it will all come to an end.

There will be no more sunrises, no minutes, hours, or days.
All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten, will pass to someone else.
Your wealth, fame, and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance.

It will not matter what you owned or what you were owed.
Your grudges, resentments, frustrations, and jealousies will finally disappear.
So, too, your hopes, ambitions, plans, and to-do lists will expire.

The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away.
It won't matter where you came from, or on what side of the tracks you lived, at the end.
It won't matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant
Even your gender and skin color will be irrelevant.

So what will matter? How will the value of your days be measured?

What will matter is not what you bought, but what you built; not what you got, but what you gave.
What will matter is not your success, but your significance.
What will matter is not what you learned, but what you taught.

What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage or sacrifice that enriched,
empowered or encouraged others to emulate your example.

What will matter is not your competence, but your character.
What will matter is not how many people you knew, but how many will feel a lasting loss when you're gone.

What will matter is not your memories, but the memories that live in those who loved you.
What will matter is how long you will be remembered, by whom and for what.

Living a life that matters doesn't happen by accident. It's not a matter of circumstance but of choice.

Choose to live a life that matters

Dealing with Difficult People

I was catching up on reading some of my favorite blogs and ran across this...
"Never again fall victim to those who love to make life miserable for the rest of us. This training gives you concrete techniques for dealing with difficult people in the workplace and at home. It provides specific strategies for getting adversaries to cooperate … bullies to back off … wallflowers to open up … chronic complainers to quiet down."
on a post at Signal vs. Noise - Dealing with Difficult People And for those of you who don't know - I work at Lane's Gifts & Collectibles so every day is an adventure in itself. A clue for those of you who are thinking "I've heard that name somewhere..." - the somewhere is here. It was too funny to not mention on here but let me set the record straight - they are great people & have treated me better than any employer ever has. *Note: I didn't say Allen is easy to get along with - I said they are good people - there is a difference. LMAO

Free Hugs Campaign. Inspiring!

Sometimes, a hug is all what we need. Free hugs is a real life controversial story of Juan Mann, A man whos sole mission was to reach out and hug a stranger to brighten up their lives.

In this age of social disconnectivity and lack of human contact, the effects of the Free Hugs campaign became phenomenal.

As this symbol of human hope spread accross the city, police and officials ordered the Free Hugs campaign BANNED. What we then witness is the true spirit of humanity come together in what can only be described as awe inspiring.

In the Spirit of the free hugs campaign, PASS THIS TO A FRIEND and HUG A STRANGER! After all, If you can reach just one person...

A Day With a Perfect Stranger

In my last post I mentioned reading Dinner With a Perfect Stranger so I thought I'd follow up to let anyone that's interested know I bought & read A Day With a Perfect Stranger this past weekend.

I'm not really sure how to describe the book to be honest. The first one is about a workaholic husband that gets a dinner invitation & it's with a man that claims to be Jesus. At first I was a little skeptical but then I considered what the conversation over dinner with Jesus could possibly include, as well as questions that might be answered - so I bought it and read it in two sessions.

The second book is about the wife of the workaholic hubby in the first one & she's pretty sure her husband has lost his mind because he's become what she considers "religious". Both of the books are quite humorous and insightful - and they are both short reads which I always like too.

Out With the Old..

I decided to put a new face on my blog to reflect all the change in the direction of my life. Yeah I know - I'm a nerd. Oh well, I haven't lost any sleep over it.

There's quite a bit going on in my world these days so I thought I'd post on here. If nothing else it helps me mentally organize what is going on & sometimes see a better solution. And sometimes the solution is that I don't know what to do & ask for some help. I wonder if there's someone out there doing research about why it's so damn hard to ask for help? We all want to feel needed but usually fail to ask others for help. Makes sense to me...NOT!

Okay, back to nerd territory. I finally took the plunge and signed up for an online ColdFusion class so that I can brush up on the things I know as well as learn some new stuff. I've only been putting that off for years now! The web site I found offers free trials to see if you like their style - Lynda.com - and their biggest factor for me is that I can do things at my own pace. Sometimes I think that's the way everything should be - do it (or not) - it's up to you. I usually end up finishing way ahead of schedule if I know there's no authority figure involved. Also nature of the beast since I am my worst enemy. LMAO

If you're looking for a book that you can finish in one or two settings & you need to re-connect with God - or a reminder that there is one. Hell I don't know. At any rate, I bought & read a book titled Dinner with a Perfect Stranger by David Gregory last weekend and I'd recommend it to anyone that has ever wanted to ask God a few questions. It's funny, it's not a Bible thumper book, but it does promote brain cell movement - which I've recently discovered (again) that I love! Check it out & tell me what you think. There's another one after this titled A Day With a Perfect Stranger that I plan to buy in the next few weeks too.

Enough for now...
